I started dreaming today... thinking... What would I do if I ran Linden Labs? I came up with a nice list!

I would give every sim a web page, this alone I could spend a week dream up cool things. This could really help build a community as well.

All snapshots taken on the sim have a option to auto-post to the web page
Plenty of options and controls for sim owner to give permissions to property owners to contribute to the content of the web page
IRC chat with others from the web page on the sim
Control access, banning and other parcel and estate properties

I would add a select box to the build window that could categorize items.

They would include categories like sexual, offensive, defensive... and maybe about 20 more

Builders of weapons and cages for example would have to mark the prims as offensive.

The additional information could be used to build out better controls for what’s allowed on a sim.

For example: a sandbox owner might allow anyone to return items marked as offensive.

People found abusing this could find their objects quickly disabled from the asset server.

Overhaul property permissions to give the owner more control.

Including disable gestures
No rezzing offensive prims, etc.

Create advanced chat controls to better administer meetings, classes, and events.

Hear only designate speakers
Colorizing effects to identify designates
Separate chat section for designated speakers’ speech

Build out a more robust permissions system.

I would love to be able to set the next owner of the next owner permissions
Add export permissions for other grids

I would port over my Ultra Inventory code and tie it directly into your inventory.

Imagine being able to edit your inventory right online

I would add a new class of avatars, that would allow anyone to login without creating accounts, but they have no powers, can’t rez, no inventory, just interact with others.
I would add a new parcel return function to return prims X number of minutes after someone leaves the parcel.
I would add new Javascript functions in the web on prim that allows for interaction in world.

For example rezzing a prim, and applying primitive parameters directly from a web on prim web page

I would open up Second Life to the Hypergrid. This would allow you to teleport from grid to grid.
I would work closer with OpenSim to ensure good standards for the future.

The OpenSim community is an eager bunch that wants to do most of my engineers’ jobs except for free and I don’t see a problem with this

I would opensource the server code.
I would allow developers to purchase database space, and add LSL functions to easily interact with it.
I would truly listen to the people, and not just pretend to.
Of course I would get to fixing those problems with the Marketplace.
I would spend my off hours going through the tons of support tickets that have gone ignored.

I could go on and on for about two weeks straight if you let me! :)

I know that all these things don’t fix every problem, and some cause problems of their own.. but nothing that couldn’t be overcome!

Sounds good. I think at a higher level...

The user interface on the viewer needs to improve greatly. Actually, they should just have a 3D viewer window component and let people build UIs around that, rather than having their weird in-world UIs.

In-world interactions and permissions need to become more natural.

In-world scripting needs a radical overhaul (probably just let people upload arbitrary Mono programs).

There needs to be much better interaction with web services.

I don't see any of that happening. Probably one should just take the OpenSim code and build a nice new commercial world around it.

I really love the idea about each sim having its own website. Its simple, and powerful. The value it could add to community sims would be awesome!
