Blackhole Assets is a new asset management system for Aurora-Sim. But what are assets? Assets are anything in world, in your inventory, textures you have uploaded, houses you have built. There were many problems with the old asset system.
OpenSim is a project I have followed for a few years now. Like many others, I have set up private sims at home. But progress has been slow to stagnant. From my point-of-view, it seems that OpenSim core developers don’t wish to build a great project, they just want to build a generic one that can be changed or adapted to many different needs. This is a great idea, but most of us really just want one thing from OpenSim: a Second Life-like grid or sim. Some OpenSim core developers run grids themselves and don’t even use Opensim. They even use that as part of the pitch for their grid saying, “This is not OpenSim.” Think about that for a minute and what that means.
For these reasons, I believe OpenSim will soon fall aside, and Aurora will take its place.
I have been writing up a bash script to quickly and easily make new OpenSim Servers. I won't say its 100% finished, but it works well. This bash script is made to run on Ubuntu 9.04 as root (not sudo), and assumes you have Apache & SSH installed.
Hey all, long time since I did a article on Opensim. But I am still playing with it all the time. I currently have 3 different stand alone sims running at home using a new Distribution named Diva Distributional.
What is the Diva Distribution. Diva is actually one of the core developers of Opensim, and delicates a lot of her time to not only making it work, but making it work well. She put together a small package called the Diva Distribution, that not only makes it easy to install, it also has an update application to keep your sim up to date. The Diva Distribution is a stand alone mega sim with hypergrid enabled. A mega sim is a 512x512 sim (four times larger than normal sim) which are new. Stand alone means that this is not using Grid mode, which is what we set up in the past. But this is not a bad thing, the line between stand alone and grid mode, is really starting to blur with all the work they have done. Hypergrid means you can teleport from your opensim, to your friends. Its awesome!
Today I learned of something very exciting, something that makes me even more excited about OpenSim.
If you're like me, you tolerate LSL because, there is no other choice. For years, I have wished for a real programming language like C#, with full access to the core sim components. Well, turns out I am not the only one that has this dream, and guess what... The dream is coming true! *wipes the tears from his eyes*
