Would a giant database of all the free items in Second Life hurt the Second Life economy?
Back in the day, Skidz Partz used to sponsor something called the FreeBieDB. It was a well put together database of thousands of free items in Second Life. Eventually, the assets server broke the database (note card with embedded items) and the database was shut down. Well, we are considering starting the project back up, this time making a web interface with a server in-world to deliver them (kinda like xstreetsl.com but all free). Do you think something like that would hurt the SL economy? I don't believe it would. But the original creator has come under fire from some people for even considering making it again. Personally, I feel that if someone sells junk, (which most freebies are, let's admit this) then some might have something to fear. Related storys on the web:

In general, most companies offer freebie products. They aren't as good as the top content being sold by the companies, but the teaser is there... a small snippet of what you can get if you invest. People seeking the freebies will find things they like and get stuck on a particular brand or company. When they're ready to become part of the SL Economy, they know who's making the content they really want.
This should come as an encouraging revelation to SL business owners. Freebies are almost literally free advertising. If you have something that isn't selling very well, consider making it a freebie and see how business picks up!
Bottom Line: If you can't create something that very few, if any, can duplicate or make better....then don't bother unless you do it for your own pleasure with no expectation of payment.
Don't whine about the Chopins just because you are a Salieri.
